[38] Now at that time the Venerable Pilindavaccha had an affliction of heat in the head (sīsābhitāpa). They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow oil for the head." It did not get better. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow nose-treatment (natthukamma)." The nasal medicine dripped out. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a nose-dropper (natthukaraṇī)."
Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus kept nose-droppers of various kinds — made of gold, made of silver. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "Just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures!" They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, nose-droppers of various kinds are not to be kept. Whoever should keep one commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, I allow one made of bone … made of the pith of conch-shell." The nasal medicine was poured in unevenly. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a double nose-dropper." It did not get better. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the inhaling of smoke." Having lit just a wick, they inhaled it; the throat burned. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a smoke-tube (dhūmanetta)."
Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus kept smoke-tubes of various kinds — made of gold, made of silver. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "Just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures!" They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, smoke-tubes of various kinds are not to be kept. Whoever should keep one commits an offence of wrong-doing. Bhikkhus, I allow one made of bone … made of the pith of conch-shell."
Now at that time the smoke-tubes were uncovered, and small creatures got inside. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a lid."
Now at that time the bhikkhus carried the smoke-tubes about in their hands. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a bag for the smoke-tube." Kept together, they rubbed against each other. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a double bag." There was no shoulder strap. They told this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a shoulder strap and a string for tying."
