[39] Now at that time the Venerable Pilindavaccha had a wind ailment (vātābādha). The physicians said thus: "Oil must be decocted." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a decoction of oil (telapāka)." Now into that decoction of oil alcohol (majja) had to be added. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow alcohol to be added to a decoction of oil."
Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus decocted oils with too much alcohol added; having drunk them, they became intoxicated. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, oil with too much alcohol added is not to be drunk. Whoever should drink it is to be dealt with according to the rule. Bhikkhus, I allow the drinking of oil with alcohol added of such a kind that neither the color, nor the smell, nor the taste of the alcohol is discernible."
Now at that time the bhikkhus had much oil decocted with too much alcohol added. Then it occurred to the bhikkhus: "How, indeed, should we proceed in the case of oil to which too much alcohol has been added?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be determined for use as an ointment (abbhañjana)."
Now at that time the Venerable Pilindavaccha had much oil decocted; there was no vessel for the oil. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow three kinds of flasks (tumba): a metal flask, a wooden flask, and a flask made from a fruit(-shell)."
Now at that time the Venerable Pilindavaccha had wind in the limbs (aṅgavāta). They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a sweating treatment (sedakamma)." He did not get better. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow sweating with a compound of herbs (sambhāraseda)." He did not get better. "Bhikkhus, I allow the great sweating (mahāseda)." He did not get better. "Bhikkhus, I allow hemp-water (bhaṅgodaka)." He did not get better. "Bhikkhus, I allow a water tub (udakakoṭṭhaka)."
