Vinayapiṭaka · Mahāvagga (2) · Vol. 5 · Section 47

[47] The people, thinking, "It is said that the venerable Pilindavaccha has displayed a miracle of psychic power (iddhipāṭihāriya), a superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma), before an assembly together with the king," were delighted and greatly inspired with confidence, and they brought the five medicines to the Venerable Pilindavaccha, namely: ghee, fresh butter, oil, honey, and molasses. Now even ordinarily the Venerable Pilindavaccha was one who received the five medicines, and whatever he received he distributed among his following. But his following became given to abundance: whatever they received they stored away, filling pots and jars; and filling water-strainers and bags, they hung them at the windows. These remained oozing and dripping, and the dwellings became overrun and strewn with mice. People wandering about on a tour of the dwellings, seeing this, complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "These ascetics, sons of the Sakyans, keep storerooms indoors, just like Seniya Bimbisāra, King of Magadha." Bhikkhus heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "How can bhikkhus set their minds on such abundance?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Is it true, as it is said, bhikkhus, that bhikkhus set their minds on such abundance?" "It is true, Blessed One." … Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Now, those medicines which are to be partaken of by sick bhikkhus, namely: ghee, fresh butter, oil, honey, and molasses—having received them, they may be used, being kept in store, for at most seven days. One who lets that period pass should be dealt with according to the rule." The first recitation section (bhāṇavāra), on the allowance of medicines.
