[140] The people, [thinking,] "It is said that the master Pilindavaccha displayed before the assembly, together with the king, a miracle of psychic power (iddhipāṭihāriya), a superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma)," were delighted and filled with confidence, and they brought the five medicines to the Venerable Pilindavaccha, namely: ghee, fresh butter, oil, honey, and molasses. Even in the ordinary course of things the Venerable Pilindavaccha was a recipient of the five medicines, and whatever he received he distributed to his following. But his following had become given to abundance: whatever they received they stored away, filling pots and water-jars; filling even water-strainers and bags, they hung them up at the windows. These remained there oozing and dripping, and the dwellings became overrun and strewn about with rats. People wandering on a tour of the dwellings, seeing this, complained, criticized, and spread it about: "These ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, keep inner storerooms, just like Seniya Bimbisāra, King of Magadha."
Bhikkhus heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can bhikkhus intend such abundance as this?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Is it true, as is said, bhikkhus, that bhikkhus intend such abundance as this?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can those foolish men intend such abundance as this? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Those medicines which may be partaken of by sick bhikkhus, namely: ghee, fresh butter, oil, honey, and molasses — having accepted them, they may be used, being stored for seven days at most; for one who lets that [period] elapse, there is [an offence of] expiation involving forfeiture (nissaggiya pācittiya)."
