[7] Then, in the morning, the Blessed One, having dressed and taken bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms, with a certain bhikkhu as his attendant recluse (pacchāsamaṇa). Then that bhikkhu, limping, followed close behind the Blessed One. A certain lay follower (upāsaka), who had put on multi-layered sandals, saw the Blessed One coming from afar; having seen him, he took off his sandals and approached the Blessed One. Having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he went up to that bhikkhu; having approached and paid homage to that bhikkhu, he said this: "Why, venerable sir, does the master limp?"
"My feet, friend, are cracked."
"Take these sandals, venerable sir."
"Enough, friend; multi-layered sandals have been prohibited by the Blessed One."
[The Blessed One said:] "Take those sandals, bhikkhu."
Then the Blessed One, on that occasion and in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow multi-layered sandals that have been cast off. Bhikkhus, new multi-layered sandals are not to be worn; whoever should wear them commits an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa)."
