[6] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus wore sandals that were entirely blue (sabbanīlikā) … wore sandals that were entirely yellow. They wore sandals that were entirely red. They wore sandals that were entirely crimson. They wore sandals that were entirely black. They wore sandals dyed entirely orange (mahāraṅgaratta). They wore sandals dyed entirely mahānāma-red. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "Just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, sandals that are entirely blue are not to be worn; sandals that are entirely yellow are not to be worn; sandals that are entirely red are not to be worn; sandals that are entirely crimson are not to be worn; sandals that are entirely black are not to be worn; sandals dyed entirely orange are not to be worn; sandals dyed entirely mahānāma-red are not to be worn. Whoever should wear them commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."

They wore sandals with straps curved like goats' horns. They wore sandals adorned with points like scorpions' tails. They wore sandals sewn round with peacock feathers. They wore ornamented sandals. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "Just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures." They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
