[96] Then the Blessed One, having given a Dhamma talk with reference to that occasion, with reference to that incident, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow bhikkhus who have completed the rains residence to spread the kathina (kaṭhinaṃ attharituṃ). For you who have spread the kathina, bhikkhus, five things will be allowable: going without informing (anāmantacāra), going without taking the full set of robes (asamādānacāra), a group meal (gaṇabhojana), keeping as many robes as needed (yāvadatthacīvara), and whatever robe-cloth arises there will be theirs. These five things, bhikkhus, will be allowable for you who have spread the kathina.
"And thus, bhikkhus, should the kathina be spread. The Saṅgha should be informed by a competent and capable bhikkhu: 'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This kathina-cloth (kaṭhinadussa) has arisen for the Saṅgha. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, the Saṅgha should give this kathina-cloth to the bhikkhu named so-and-so for spreading the kathina. This is the motion (ñatti).
"'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This kathina-cloth has arisen for the Saṅgha. The Saṅgha gives this kathina-cloth to the bhikkhu named so-and-so for spreading the kathina. Any venerable one to whom the giving of this kathina-cloth to the bhikkhu named so-and-so for spreading the kathina is agreeable should remain silent; anyone to whom it is not agreeable should speak.
"'This kathina-cloth has been given by the Saṅgha to the bhikkhu named so-and-so for spreading the kathina. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold it.'
"Thus, bhikkhus, is the kathina spread; thus it is not spread."
