Kathinakkhandhaka

Vinayapiṭaka · Mahāvagga (2) · Vol. 5 · Section 97

[97] And how, bhikkhus, is the kathina (kaṭhina) not spread (anatthata)? The kathina is not spread merely by marking (ullikhita) the cloth. The kathina is not spread merely by washing (dhovana) it. The kathina is not spread merely by calculating the robe-cloth (cīvaravicāraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by cutting (chedana) it. The kathina is not spread merely by tacking (bandhana) it. The kathina is not spread merely by sewing the seams (ovaṭṭikakaraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by making the fasteners (kaṇḍusakaraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by strengthening the cloth (daḷhīkammakaraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by adding the border (anuvātakaraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by adding the edging (paribhaṇḍakaraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by patching (ovaṭṭeyyakaraṇa). The kathina is not spread merely by dyeing it a dull colour, as a blanket is dyed (kambalamaddana). The kathina is not spread with cloth obtained by hinting (nimittakata). The kathina is not spread with cloth obtained by roundabout talk (parikathākata). The kathina is not spread with cloth taken on temporary loan (kukkukata). The kathina is not spread with cloth that has been stored up (sannidhikata). The kathina is not spread with cloth subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya). The kathina is not spread with cloth not made allowable (akappakata). The kathina is not spread except with an outer robe (saṅghāṭi). The kathina is not spread except with an upper robe (uttarāsaṅga). The kathina is not spread except with a lower robe (antaravāsaka). The kathina is not spread except with a robe of five segments (pañcaka) or of more than five, cut out and furnished with panels (maṇḍala) on that very day. The kathina is not spread except through the spreading (atthāra) by an individual (puggala). Nor is the kathina properly spread if one standing outside the boundary (sīmā) gives his approval (anumodati) of it; thus too the kathina is not spread. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, the kathina is not spread.
