[98] Bhikkhus, and how is the kathina spread? —
1. The kathina is spread with new cloth (ahata).
2. The kathina is spread with cloth reckoned as new (ahatakappa).
3. The kathina is spread with worn cloth (pilotikā).
4. The kathina is spread with rag-cloth (paṃsukūla).
5. The kathina is spread with shop-remnant cloth (pāpaṇika).
6. The kathina is spread with cloth not obtained by making a hint (animittakata).
7. The kathina is spread with cloth not obtained by roundabout talk (aparikathākata).
8. The kathina is spread with cloth not obtained on temporary loan (akukkukata).
9. The kathina is spread with cloth not obtained by storing up (asannidhikata).
10. The kathina is spread with cloth not subject to relinquishment (anissaggiya).
11. The kathina is spread with cloth that has been made allowable (kappakata).
12. The kathina is spread with an outer robe (saṅghāṭi).
13. The kathina is spread with an upper robe (uttarāsaṅga).
14. The kathina is spread with a lower robe (antaravāsaka).
15. The kathina is spread with cloth of five segments, or of more than five, cut up and furnished with panels (samaṇḍalīkata) on that very day.
16. The kathina is spread through the spreading by an individual (puggala).
17. And the kathina is properly (sammā) spread; if one standing within the boundary (sīmā) expresses approval of it, thus too the kathina is spread.
Bhikkhus, thus is the kathina spread.
