[1129] "How is the kathina spread (atthata)?" The kathina is spread in seventeen ways: the kathina is spread with new cloth (ahata); the kathina is spread with cloth treated as equivalent to new (ahatakappa); the kathina is spread with worn cloth (pilotikā); the kathina is spread with rag-cloth (paṃsukūla); the kathina is spread with shop-remnant cloth (pāpaṇika); the kathina is spread with cloth not obtained by hinting (animittakata); the kathina is spread with cloth not obtained by roundabout talk (aparikathākata); the kathina is spread with cloth not borrowed (akukkukata); the kathina is spread with cloth not kept in store (asannidhikata); the kathina is spread with cloth not subject to forfeiture (anissaggiya); the kathina is spread with cloth made allowable (kappakata); the kathina is spread with an outer robe (saṅghāṭi); the kathina is spread with an upper robe (uttarāsaṅga); the kathina is spread with an inner robe (antaravāsaka); the kathina is spread with a robe of five sections or of more than five, cut and furnished with panels (maṇḍala) on that very day; the kathina is spread through the spreading by an individual; and the kathina is indeed rightly spread if one standing within the boundary (sīmā) expresses approval of it. Thus too is the kathina spread. In these seventeen ways the kathina is spread.
