[1127] In what way is the kathina not spread (anatthata)? The kathina is not spread in twenty-four ways: the kathina is not spread by mere marking [of the cloth]; the kathina is not spread by mere washing; the kathina is not spread by mere planning out of the robe-cloth; the kathina is not spread by mere cutting; the kathina is not spread by mere tacking; the kathina is not spread by the mere making of the hem-seam (ovaṭṭika); the kathina is not spread by the mere making of the fastening-loops (kaṇḍūsa); the kathina is not spread by the mere doing of strengthening work (daḷhīkamma); the kathina is not spread by the mere making of the back-border (anuvāta); the kathina is not spread by the mere making of the edging (paribhaṇḍa); the kathina is not spread by the mere applying of a patch (ovaṭṭeyya); the kathina is not spread by mere dulling of the colour in dyeing (kamalamaddana); the kathina is not spread with [cloth obtained] by giving a hint (nimittakata); the kathina is not spread with [cloth obtained] by roundabout talk (parikathā); the kathina is not spread with borrowed [cloth] (kukkukata); the kathina is not spread with [cloth] that has been kept in store overnight (sannidhikata); the kathina is not spread with [cloth] that is subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya); the kathina is not spread with [cloth] that has not been made allowable (akappakata); the kathina is not spread except with a saṅghāṭi (outer robe); the kathina is not spread except with an uttarāsaṅga (upper robe); the kathina is not spread except with an antaravāsaka (lower robe); the kathina is not spread except with [a robe of] five segments or more than five segments, cut and furnished with panels (maṇḍala) on that very day; the kathina is not spread except through the spreading by an individual; and even if the kathina has indeed been properly spread, if one standing outside the boundary (sīmā) expresses approval of it, [it is not spread]. In this way too the kathina is not spread.
