[134] The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "It is not fitting, foolish man (moghapurisa), not becoming, not proper, unworthy of an ascetic, not allowable, not to be done. How indeed could you, foolish man, revile with what is inferior and disparage with what is inferior the householder (gahapati) Citta, who has faith and confidence, a donor, a doer of service, a supporter of the Saṅgha? This, foolish man, is not for the confidence of those who lack confidence …" Having rebuked him … having given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha carry out an act of reconciliation (paṭisāraṇīyakamma) against the bhikkhu Sudhamma: 'You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta.'
"And thus, bhikkhus, should it be done. First the bhikkhu Sudhamma should be accused; having been accused, he should be made to recall; having been made to recall, he should be charged with the offence (āpatti). Having charged him with the offence, the Saṅgha should be informed by a competent, capable bhikkhu:
"'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. This bhikkhu Sudhamma reviles with what is inferior and disparages with what is inferior the householder Citta, who has faith and confidence, a donor, a doer of service, a supporter of the Saṅgha. If it seems the right time to the Saṅgha, let the Saṅgha carry out an act of reconciliation against the bhikkhu Sudhamma: "You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta." This is the motion (ñatti).
"'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. This bhikkhu Sudhamma reviles with what is inferior and disparages with what is inferior the householder Citta, who has faith and confidence, a donor, a doer of service, a supporter of the Saṅgha. The Saṅgha carries out an act of reconciliation against the bhikkhu Sudhamma: "You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta." Whichever venerable one approves of the carrying out of the act of reconciliation against the bhikkhu Sudhamma — "You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta" — let him be silent; whoever does not approve, let him speak.
"'A second time also I speak this matter. … A third time also I speak this matter: Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. This bhikkhu Sudhamma reviles with what is inferior and disparages with what is inferior the householder Citta, who has faith and confidence, a donor, a doer of service, a supporter of the Saṅgha. The Saṅgha carries out an act of reconciliation against the bhikkhu Sudhamma: "You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta." Whichever venerable one approves of the carrying out of the act of reconciliation against the bhikkhu Sudhamma — "You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta" — let him be silent; whoever does not approve, let him speak.
"'The act of reconciliation has been carried out by the Saṅgha against the bhikkhu Sudhamma: "You must ask forgiveness of the householder Citta." It is approved by the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold it.'"
