[165] "Bhikkhus, that bhikkhu Sudhamma, having gone to Macchikāsaṇḍa together with the accompanying messenger (anudūta) bhikkhu, should ask forgiveness of the householder (gahapati) Citta, saying: 'Forgive me, householder; I will restore your confidence.' If, being spoken to thus, he forgives, that is good. If he does not forgive, the accompanying messenger bhikkhu should say: 'Forgive this bhikkhu, householder; he will restore your confidence.' If, being spoken to thus, he forgives, that is good. If he does not forgive, the accompanying messenger bhikkhu should say: 'Forgive this bhikkhu, householder; I will restore your confidence in him.' If, being spoken to thus, he forgives, that is good. If he does not forgive, the accompanying messenger bhikkhu should say: 'Forgive this bhikkhu, householder, at the word of the Saṅgha.' If, being spoken to thus, he forgives, that is good. If he does not forgive, the accompanying messenger bhikkhu, without having him leave the range of the householder Citta's sight and without having him leave the range of his hearing, should have the bhikkhu Sudhamma arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, sit down squatting on his heels, raise his joined palms in reverence, and confess that offence (āpatti)."
