[277] Then the Blessed One, on that account, in that connection, having had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus convened, questioned the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, formerly of the vulture-killers (gandhabādhipubba): "Is it true, as is said, Ariṭṭha, that an evil view of this sort has arisen in you: 'As I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, those things declared by the Blessed One to be obstructive are not truly able to obstruct one who indulges in them'?"
"Even so, venerable sir, do I understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One: those things declared by the Blessed One to be obstructive are not truly able to obstruct one who indulges in them."
"To whom, then, foolish man, do you understand the Dhamma to have been taught by me in such a way? Have I not, foolish man, in many ways declared things to be obstructive? And they are indeed able to obstruct one who indulges in them. Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to afford little gratification, much suffering (dukkha), much despair; the danger here is still greater. Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a skeleton of bones, affording much suffering, much despair; the danger here is still greater. Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a lump of flesh … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a grass torch … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a pit of glowing coals … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a dream … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like borrowed goods … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like the fruit of a tree … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a butcher's knife and block … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a sword-stake … Sensual pleasures have been declared by me to be like a snake's head, affording much suffering, much despair; the danger here is still greater. And yet you, foolish man, by a view wrongly grasped by yourself, both misrepresent us and dig up your own self, and you generate much demerit; that, foolish man, will be for your harm and suffering for a long time. This, foolish man, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those with confidence …" Having rebuked him … having given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha carry out an act of suspension (ukkhepanīyakamma) against the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, formerly of the vulture-killers, for not relinquishing his evil view — suspension of communion with the Saṅgha."
