[469] And thus, bhikkhus, should probation for complete purity (suddhantaparivāsa) be given.¹ ¹ In the M. and Yu. editions, the word "ca" does not appear. Thus should probation (parivāsa) be given. And how, bhikkhus, should probation for complete purity be given? He does not know the limit of the offenses (āpatti); he does not know the limit of the nights; he does not remember the limit of the offenses; he does not remember the limit of the nights; he is doubtful about the limit of the offenses; he is doubtful about the limit of the nights — probation for complete purity should be given. He knows the limit of the offenses; he does not know the limit of the nights; he remembers the limit of the offenses; he does not remember the limit of the nights; he is free of doubt about the limit of the offenses; he is doubtful about the limit of the nights — probation for complete purity should be given. He knows some of the limit of the offenses and does not know some; he does not know the limit of the nights; he remembers some of the limit of the offenses and does not remember some; he does not remember the limit of the nights; he is doubtful about some of the limit of the offenses and free of doubt about some; he is doubtful about the limit of the nights — probation for complete purity should be given. He does not know the limit of the offenses; he knows some of the limit of the nights and does not know some; he does not remember the limit of the offenses; he remembers some of the limit of the nights and does not remember some; he is doubtful about the limit of the offenses; he is doubtful about some of the limit of the nights and free of doubt about some — probation for complete purity should be given. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should probation for complete purity be given.
