[470] "Bhikkhus, how should probation (parivāso) be given? He knows the limit of the offenses (āpattipariyantaṃ), he knows the limit of the nights (rattipariyantaṃ); he remembers the limit of the offenses, he remembers the limit of the nights; he is free from doubt about the limit of the offenses, he is free from doubt about the limit of the nights — probation should be given.
He does not know the limit of the offenses, but he knows the limit of the nights; he does not remember the limit of the offenses, but he remembers the limit of the nights; he is in doubt about the limit of the offenses, but he is free from doubt about the limit of the nights — probation should be given.
He knows some of the limit of the offenses and does not know some; he knows the limit of the nights; he remembers some of the limit of the offenses and does not remember some; he remembers the limit of the nights; he is in doubt about some of the limit of the offenses and free from doubt about some; he is free from doubt about the limit of the nights — probation should be given.
Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should probation be given."
