[602] Bhikkhus, there are these three grantings of the verdict of past insanity (amūḷhavinaya) that are not in accordance with the Dhamma, and three that are in accordance with the Dhamma. What are the three grantings of the verdict of past insanity that are not in accordance with the Dhamma?
Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu has committed an offense (āpatti). The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single individual reproves him: "Does the venerable one remember having committed an offense of such a kind?" Though he does remember, he speaks thus: "Friend, I do not remember having committed an offense of such a kind." The Saṅgha grants him the verdict of past insanity. That granting of the verdict of past insanity is not in accordance with the Dhamma.
