[607] Bhikkhus, here again a bhikkhu is mad, his mind deranged. Because of that madness and mental derangement, much that is unbefitting an ascetic has been committed by him in speech and in deed. The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single person reproves him: "Does the venerable one remember having committed an offense (āpatti) of such a kind?" Being mad, he makes a display of madness, saying: "I too act thus, and you too act thus; this is allowable for me, and this is allowable for you too." The Saṅgha gives him the verdict of past insanity (amūḷhavinaya). The giving of the verdict of past insanity is legitimate (dhammika). These are the three legitimate givings of the verdict of past insanity.
