[110] Now at that time Vaḍḍha the Licchavi was a companion of the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka. Then Vaḍḍha the Licchavi approached the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka, and having approached, he said this to the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka: "I pay homage, venerable sirs." When this was said, the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka did not speak to him. A second time Vaḍḍha the Licchavi said this to the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka: "I pay homage, venerable sirs." A second time the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka did not speak to him. A third time Vaḍḍha the Licchavi said this to the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka: "I pay homage, venerable sirs." A third time the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka did not speak to him.
"In what have I offended against the venerable ones? Why do the venerable ones not speak to me?"
"It is just because, friend Vaḍḍha, while we are being harassed by Dabba the Mallaputta, you look on with indifference."
"What can I do, venerable sirs?"
"If you were willing, friend Vaḍḍha, this very day the Blessed One would have the Venerable Dabba the Mallaputta expelled."
"What am I to do, venerable sirs? What is it possible for me to do?"
"Come, friend Vaḍḍha, go to the Blessed One, and having approached, say this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, this is improper, this is unfitting. That quarter, venerable sir, which was free from fear, free from calamity, free from danger — that very quarter is now beset with fear, beset with calamity, beset with danger. From where there was calm, from there a gale now blows; the very water, it seems, is ablaze. My wife (pajāpati) has been defiled by master Dabba the Mallaputta.'"
"So be it, venerable sirs," Vaḍḍha the Licchavi replied in assent to the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka; and he approached the Blessed One, and having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Vaḍḍha the Licchavi said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this is improper, this is unfitting. That quarter, venerable sir, which was free from fear, free from calamity, free from danger — that very quarter is now beset with fear, beset with calamity, beset with danger. From where there was calm, from there a gale now blows; the very water, it seems, is ablaze. My wife has been defiled by master Dabba the Mallaputta."
