[115] Then the Venerable Ānanda, having dressed in the morning and taking his bowl and robe, approached the residence of Vaḍḍha the Licchavi; and having approached, he said this to Vaḍḍha the Licchavi: "Friend Vaḍḍha, the Saṅgha has overturned the bowl (patta-nikkujjana) against you; you are excluded from communion with the Saṅgha." Then Vaḍḍha the Licchavi, [thinking,] "It seems the Saṅgha has overturned the bowl against me; it seems I am excluded from communion with the Saṅgha," fainted and fell down on that very spot.
Then the friends and companions, the kinsmen and blood-relations of Vaḍḍha the Licchavi said this to Vaḍḍha the Licchavi: "Enough, friend Vaḍḍha, do not sorrow, do not lament; we shall reconcile the Blessed One and the Saṅgha of bhikkhus." Then Vaḍḍha the Licchavi, together with his wife and children, together with his friends and companions, together with his kinsmen and blood-relations, with wet garments and wet hair, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, having bowed down with his head at the feet of the Blessed One, he said this to the Blessed One: "A transgression overcame me, venerable sir, in that — so foolish, so confused, so unskilful was I — I charged the noble Dabba the Mallaputta with a groundless failure in virtue. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One accept my transgression as a transgression, for the sake of restraint in the future."
"Truly, friend Vaḍḍha, a transgression overcame you, in that — so foolish, so confused, so unskilful were you — you charged Dabba the Mallaputta with a groundless failure in virtue. But since you, friend Vaḍḍha, having seen the transgression as a transgression, make amends in accordance with the Dhamma, we accept this from you. For this, friend Vaḍḍha, is growth in the discipline of the noble one: that one who, having seen a transgression as a transgression, makes amends in accordance with the Dhamma, undertakes restraint in the future."
