[116] Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha turn upright the bowl (pattaṃ ukkujjatu) for Vaḍḍha the Licchavi; let it restore association (sambhoga) with the Saṅgha.
Bhikkhus, the bowl should be turned upright for a lay follower (upāsaka) who possesses eight qualities: he does not strive for the bhikkhus' loss of gains; he does not strive for the bhikkhus' harm; he does not strive to make the bhikkhus' residence impossible; he does not abuse or revile bhikkhus; he does not cause bhikkhus to split with bhikkhus; he does not speak dispraise of the Buddha; he does not speak dispraise of the Dhamma; he does not speak dispraise of the Saṅgha. Bhikkhus, I allow the bowl to be turned upright for a lay follower who possesses these eight qualities."
