[12] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā) wore ear-ornaments (vallikā). … They wore ornamental chains (pāmaṅga). They wore neck-strings (kaṇṭhasuttaka). They wore waist-strings (kaṭisuttaka). They wore bangles (ovaṭṭika). They wore armlets (kāyura). They wore wrist-ornaments (hatthābharaṇa). They wore finger-rings (aṅgulimuddikā). People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "… just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures." Bhikkhus heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. … Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the group-of-six bhikkhus wear ear-ornaments, wear ornamental chains, wear neck-strings, wear waist-strings, wear bangles, wear armlets, wear wrist-ornaments, wear finger-rings?"

Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, an ear-ornament is not to be worn; an ornamental chain is not to be worn; a neck-string is not to be worn; a waist-string is not to be worn; a bangle is not to be worn; an armlet is not to be worn; a wrist-ornament is not to be worn; a finger-ring is not to be worn. Whoever should wear one commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
