[124] Now at that time a certain woman who had miscarried (apagatagabbhā) invited the bhikkhus, spread out a cloth, and said this: "Venerable sirs, step on the cloth." The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not step on it. "Venerable sirs, step on the cloth for the sake of good fortune (maṅgala)." The bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not step on it. Then that woman complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the venerable ones, when asked for the sake of good fortune, not step on the strip of cloth (ceḷapaṭikā)?" The bhikkhus heard that woman complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, householders set store by auspicious observances. I allow, bhikkhus, one who is asked by householders for the sake of good fortune to step on a strip of cloth."
