[137] Bhikkhus, it should be given in this way. That sick bhikkhu should approach the Saṅgha, arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, pay homage at the feet of the senior bhikkhus, sit down on his heels, raise his joined palms in reverence, and address the Saṅgha thus: "Venerable sirs, I am sick; I am not able to walk about without a staff. Venerable sirs, I request the authorization for a staff (daṇḍasammuti) from the Saṅgha." It should be requested a second time; it should be requested a third time.
