[142] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was sick; he was not able to walk about without a staff, nor was he able to carry his bowl without a sling (sikkā). They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, I allow the giving of the authorization for a staff and a sling (daṇḍasikkā-sammuti) to a sick bhikkhu. And thus, bhikkhus, should it be given: that sick bhikkhu, having approached the Saṅgha, having arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, having paid homage at the feet of the senior bhikkhus, having sat down squatting on his heels and raised his joined palms in reverence, should address it thus: 'Venerable sirs, I am sick; I am not able to walk about without a staff, nor am I able to carry my bowl without a sling. Therefore, venerable sirs, I ask the Saṅgha for the authorization for a staff and a sling.' A second time it should be asked; a third time it should be asked."
