[144] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was a ruminator (romaṭṭhaka). Having chewed the cud again and again, he would swallow it down. Bhikkhus complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "This bhikkhu eats food at the wrong time (vikāla)." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, this bhikkhu has not long passed away from the womb of a cow. I allow, bhikkhus, rumination for a ruminator. But, bhikkhus, it should not be swallowed after having been brought out beyond the door of the mouth. Whoever should swallow it is to be dealt with according to the rule."
