[150] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) had their beards (massu) trimmed; they had their beards grown long; they had them dressed like a goat's beard (golomika); they had them shaped into a rectangle (caturassaka); they had the hair of the chest arranged (parimukha); they had a line of hair left on the belly (aḍḍharuka); they kept whiskers (dāṭhikā); they had the hair in the private parts (sambādha) removed. People looked down upon this, criticized it, and spread it about, saying, "… just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures." … They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, the beard is not to be trimmed, the beard is not to be grown long, it is not to be dressed like a goat's beard, it is not to be shaped into a rectangle, the hair of the chest is not to be arranged, a line of hair is not to be left on the belly, whiskers are not to be kept, the hair in the private parts is not to be removed. Whoever should have it removed commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
