[169] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus wore the lower robe in the manner of householders: in the "elephant's trunk" style (hatthisoṇḍika), the "fish-tail" style (macchavāḷaka), the "four-cornered" style (catukkaṇṇaka), the "palmyra-fan" style (tālavaṇṭaka), and the "hundred-pleats" style (satavallika). People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "… just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures" … They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, the lower robe should not be worn in the manner of householders: the elephant's-trunk style, the fish-tail style, the four-cornered style, the palmyra-fan style, or the hundred-pleats style. Whoever should wear it thus commits an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa)."
