[187] Now at that time the Blessed One was seated teaching the Dhamma, surrounded by a great assembly. A certain bhikkhu had eaten garlic, and he, thinking, "Let the bhikkhus not be disturbed," sat down to one side. The Blessed One saw that bhikkhu seated to one side, and having seen him, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, why is that bhikkhu seated to one side?"
"Venerable sir, that bhikkhu has eaten garlic, and thinking, 'Let the bhikkhus not be disturbed,' he sat down to one side."
"Bhikkhus, should a bhikkhu eat that which, having been eaten, would leave him excluded from a Dhamma talk (dhammakathā) such as this?"
"Certainly not, venerable sir."
"Bhikkhus, garlic should not be eaten. Whoever should eat it commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
