[204] People heard: "Dwellings (vihāra), it is said, have been allowed by the Blessed One." They had dwellings built with care. Those dwellings had no door-panels; snakes, scorpions, and centipedes got in. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a door-panel (kavāṭa)."
Having made a hole in the wall, they tied the door-panel on with creepers and with cord. These were gnawed by rats and by white ants; the door-panels, their fastenings gnawed through, fell down. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a door-frame (piṭṭhasaṅghāṭa), a lower pivot-socket (udukkhalika), and an upper pivot-socket (uttarapāsaka)."
The door-panels would not close … "Bhikkhus, I allow a hole for pulling (āviñchanacchidda) and a pulling-cord (āviñchanarajju)."
The door-panels could not be fastened shut … "Bhikkhus, I allow a bolt-post (aggaḷavaṭṭi), a "monkey's-head" bolt-socket (kapisīsaka), a pin (sūcikā), and a latch-bolt (ghaṭikā)."
