[207] Now at that time the dwellings were without windows (avātapānakā); they were harmful to the eyes and foul-smelling. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow three kinds of windows: a window with a railing (vedikāvātapāna), a window with a lattice (jālavātapāna), and a window with bars (salākavātapāna)."
Squirrels (kālakā) and bats got in through the window openings. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a window cloth (vātapānacakkalika)."
Squirrels and bats got in through the gaps in the window cloth … "Bhikkhus, I allow window shutters (vātapānakavāṭa) and window mats (vātapānabhisika)."
