"Those people, skilled in the Dhamma, who pay respect to their elders,
are praised in this very life, and their destiny hereafter is a happy one."
"Bhikkhus, since even those beings born as animals will dwell with mutual respect, with deference, and harmonious in conduct toward one another, here indeed, bhikkhus, it would be becoming that you, having gone forth in a Dhamma and Discipline so well proclaimed, should dwell with mutual respect, with deference, and harmonious in conduct toward one another. This, bhikkhus, is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence … Having rebuked them and given a Dhamma talk, he addressed the bhikkhus: 'Bhikkhus, I allow, according to seniority, salutation, rising up in welcome, the gesture of reverence (añjalikamma), acts of proper respect (sāmīcikamma), the best seat, the best water, and the best almsfood. And, bhikkhus, that which belongs to the Saṅgha (saṅghika) is not to be blocked according to seniority. Whoever should block it commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).'"
