[29] Now at that time a block of costly sandalwood heartwood had come into the possession of the merchant (seṭṭhi) of Rājagaha. Then it occurred to the merchant of Rājagaha: "What if I were to have a bowl turned from this block of sandalwood? The turnings will be for my own use, and I shall give the bowl as a gift." Then the merchant of Rājagaha, having had a bowl turned from that block of sandalwood, suspended it in a string bag, fastened it to the top of a bamboo pole, and raised it aloft on a succession of bamboos bound one upon another, and spoke thus: "Whatever ascetic or brahmin is both an arahant and possessed of psychic power (iddhi), let him take down the bowl — it is given!"
