[32] Now at that time the merchant (seṭṭhi) of Rājagaha, together with his sons and wife, was standing in his own dwelling, with hands joined in reverence, paying homage, saying: "Venerable sir, let the master Bhāradvāja alight right here in our dwelling." Then the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja alighted at the dwelling of the merchant of Rājagaha. Then the merchant of Rājagaha took the bowl from the hand of the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, filled it with costly hard food, and gave it to the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja. Then the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, taking that bowl, went to the monastery. People heard: "The master Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, it is said, has taken down the bowl of the merchant of Rājagaha." And those people, making a loud noise, a great noise, followed close behind the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja. The Blessed One heard the loud noise, the great noise, and having heard it, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "What now, Ānanda, is that loud noise, that great noise?" "Venerable sir, the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja has taken down the bowl of the merchant of Rājagaha. People heard, venerable sir: 'The master Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja, it is said, has taken down the bowl of the merchant of Rājagaha,' and those people, venerable sir, making a loud noise, a great noise, have followed close behind the Venerable Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja. That, Blessed One, is that loud noise, that great noise."
