[336] (Summary verses / uddāna of the Chapter on Lodgings)
At that time a dwelling (vihāra) had not been allowed by the supreme Buddha;
those disciples of the Conqueror came forth from their lodgings here and there.¹
The merchant householder, seeing them,² said this to the bhikkhus:
"I would have (dwellings) built — would you dwell (in them)?" They asked the Leader in return.
A dwelling, a half-gabled house (aḍḍhayoga), a long storied mansion (pāsāda), a flat-roofed building (hammiya), a cave —
the five (kinds of) abodes he allowed; the merchant had dwellings built.
People had a dwelling built without door-panels, unenclosed.
A door-panel, a door-frame, a mortise-socket and the (hollow) above,
a hole for pulling through and a cord (for pulling), a bolt and a "monkey's-head" (post),
a pin, a block, a keyhole; (keys of) metal, of wood, and of horn;
a lock and a latch-pin too; a roof, with plastering³;
a railed (window), lattice- and slat-(windows), a small cloth (blind) and a screen;
a bench, and a bed of woven strips⁴; the charnel-ground (couch); the masāraka (bed);
the bundi(kābaddha) and the crab-legged; the detachable-legged (bed), the couch-chair, the raised one⁵;

the āmalaka(-chair), planks, wicker chairs⁷, and the chair of straw too;
and high (beds), the snake, supports (for the feet), feet of eight fingerbreadths (at most)⁸;
thread, the chessboard (weave), a small cloth; the cotton mattress, the half-body (pillow);
the Mountain-Top (festival), and the mattresses too, and whatever cloth (was given) for lodgings⁹;
the upholstered (stuffing) falls down below; and they tear off (the covers) and carry them away;
marking and hand-marking he allowed¹⁰; the sectarians;
and white and black in the dwelling¹¹; chaff(-clay) and fine clay;
tree-gum, the hand(-trowel), the vessel¹²; mustard (powder), beeswax-oil;
to remove where laid on too thick; the rough (surface); lump-clay¹³;
tree-gum and imaginative (drawings); the low (site) and the raised base, and climbing up;
they fall down — the āḷakā; again, the half-wall and the three (kinds of inner room);
in a small (dwelling), the base of the wall; it rains in; and the loud outcry¹⁴;
the peg and the robe-rails¹⁵; the porch with the movable screen;
the railing for support; grass-powder — here one should apply the method of the passage below;
in the open air (the water) is scorched; a hall, and — as below — a vessel;
a dwelling, a gateway too, a cell-compound with a fire-hall;
and again a gateway in the monastery — as below¹⁶, one should apply the method;
plaster¹⁷; and Anāthapiṇḍika, faithful, went to the Sītavana;
having seen the Dhamma, he invited the Leader together with the Saṅgha;
he gave orders along the road; the company had monasteries built;
at Vesālī, building-work (navakamma); and they occupied (lodgings) beforehand¹⁸;
"Who deserves (the first portion) in the refectory¹⁹?" The partridge; and those not to be paid homage;
occupying; within the houses²⁰; cotton-down; he came down to Sāvatthī;
he established²¹ the monastery; and the uproar in the refectory;
the sick, and the best sleeping-places; the pretexts; the (group of) seventeen there;
"By whom, pray? How, pray?" He distributed²² by (count of) dwellings
and by the share of cells; a share should not be given to one unwilling;
outside the boundary, and for all time; the three assignments of lodgings;
and Upananda; he praised (the Vinaya); those standing; seats of equal (rank);
those of equal seating broke (the beds); groups of three and groups of two²³;
those of unequal seating²⁴ (may share) a long (seat); to make use of the (mansion) with verandah²⁵;

schism-makers, shedders of (a Buddha's) blood, and the two-sexed as well —
"Let not the Saṅgha's (property) come to loss": the work is to be given to another;
when unfinished, (it may be given) to another; when done, should he depart, (it remains) his alone.
If he disrobes, has died, or (proves to be) a novice,
or has renounced the training, or has committed the extreme (offence),
the Saṅgha itself is the owner. (If) mad, deranged, (overcome by) feeling,
(suspended) for not seeing, for not making amends, for a (wrong) view — that remains his alone.
A paṇḍaka, one in communion by theft, an animal, a matricide or a patricide,
a killer (of an arahant), a violator too, schism, blood-shedding, the two-sexed —
if he admits (to being such), the Saṅgha itself is the owner.
