[351] Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna approached the Blessed One; having approached, he bowed to the Blessed One and sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, Kakkudha the Koḷiyan son, my attendant, recently deceased, has arisen in a certain mind-made body (manomaya kāya). The acquisition of individual existence (attabhāvapaṭilābha) he has obtained is such as, say, two or three Magadhan village fields; yet with that acquisition of individual existence he afflicts neither himself nor another. Then, venerable sir, the deva-son Kakkudha approached me; having approached and bowed to me, he stood at one side. Standing at one side, venerable sir, the deva-son Kakkudha said this to me: 'Venerable sir, in Devadatta — overcome by gain, honor, and fame, his mind (citta) obsessed by them — there arose a wish of this sort: "I shall lead the Saṅgha of bhikkhus." And, venerable sir, with the very arising of that thought (cittuppāda), Devadatta fell away from that psychic power (iddhi).' This, venerable sir, is what the deva-son Kakkudha said; having said this, he bowed to me, circumambulated me with his right side toward me, and vanished right there."
"But, Moggallāna, have you encompassed the mind of the deva-son Kakkudha with your own mind and understood: 'Whatever the deva-son Kakkudha says, all that is just so and not otherwise'?"
"Venerable sir, I have encompassed the mind of the deva-son Kakkudha with my own mind and understood: 'Whatever the deva-son Kakkudha says, all that is just so and not otherwise.'"
"Guard that statement, Moggallāna! Guard that statement, Moggallāna! Now that foolish man (moghapurisa) will reveal himself by himself."
