[353] Furthermore, Moggallāna, here some teacher, being of impure livelihood (ājīva), claims, "I am of pure livelihood," and, "My livelihood is pure, cleansed, undefiled." His disciples know him thus: "This worthy teacher, being of impure livelihood, claims, 'I am of pure livelihood,' and, 'My livelihood is pure, cleansed, undefiled.' Now if we were to inform the householders, that would not be pleasing to him; and how could we treat him with what is displeasing to him? Moreover, he is honored with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. Whatever he himself does, by that he himself will be known." Moggallāna, disciples protect such a teacher with regard to livelihood; and such a teacher expects protection from his disciples with regard to livelihood.
