[371] Then those four men … Then those eight men … Then those sixteen men, [thinking,] "Why now are those eight men so long in coming?" went along the path in the opposite direction and saw the Blessed One seated at the foot of a certain tree. Having seen him, they approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. The Blessed One gave them a progressive discourse (anupubbikathā), that is to say: talk on giving (dānakathā), talk on virtue (sīlakathā) … independent of others in the Teacher's dispensation, they said this to the Blessed One: "Excellent, venerable sir! Excellent, venerable sir! … May the Blessed One remember us as lay followers (upāsaka) who have gone for refuge for life, from this day forward."
Then that one man approached Devadatta; having approached, he said this to Devadatta: "Venerable sir, I am not able to deprive that Blessed One of life; that Blessed One is of great psychic power, of great might." "Enough, friend! Do not you deprive the ascetic Gotama of life; I myself will deprive the ascetic Gotama of life."
