[385] Then Devadatta, together with his following, entered Rājagaha and set about convincing the people by means of the five points (vatthu): "Friends, we approached the ascetic Gotama and requested the five points, saying: 'Venerable sir, the Blessed One in many ways speaks in praise of one of few wishes … of the arousing of energy (vīriya). Venerable sir, these five points conduce in many ways to fewness of wishes … to the arousing of energy. It would be good, venerable sir, if the bhikkhus were forest-dwellers for as long as life lasts — whoever should resort to a village neighbourhood, fault would touch him; … if for as long as life lasts they should not eat fish and meat — whoever should eat fish and meat, fault would touch him.' These five points the ascetic Gotama does not allow; but we, having undertaken these five points, live in accordance with them."
