[386] Among those people, those who were without faith, without confidence, and of poor intelligence spoke thus: "These ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, are austere (dhutā), living a life of effacement; but the ascetic Gotama lives luxuriously and is intent upon abundance."
But those people who had faith and confidence, who were wise and intelligent, criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can Devadatta strive for schism in the Saṅgha (saṅghabheda), for the breaking of the wheel (cakkabheda)?"
Bhikkhus heard those people criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can Devadatta strive for schism in the Saṅgha, for the breaking of the wheel?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. …
"Is it true, Devadatta, as they say, that you are striving for schism in the Saṅgha, for the breaking of the wheel?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
"Enough, Devadatta! Do not let schism in the Saṅgha find favor with you. Grave, Devadatta, is schism in the Saṅgha. Whoever, Devadatta, divides a united Saṅgha begets evil that endures for an eon; for an eon he is boiled in hell. But whoever, Devadatta, makes united a Saṅgha that has been divided begets the merit of Brahmā; for an eon he rejoices in heaven. Enough, Devadatta! Do not let schism in the Saṅgha find favor with you. Grave, Devadatta, is schism in the Saṅgha."
