[394] Then the Venerable Sāriputta exhorted and instructed the bhikkhus with a talk on the Dhamma, with instruction accompanied by the marvel of mind-reading (ādesanāpāṭihāriya); the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna exhorted and instructed the bhikkhus with a talk on the Dhamma, with instruction accompanied by the marvel of psychic power (iddhipāṭihāriya). Then, as those bhikkhus were being exhorted and instructed by the Venerable Sāriputta with instruction accompanied by the marvel of mind-reading, and by the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna with instruction accompanied by the marvel of psychic power, there arose in them the dust-free, stainless eye of the Dhamma (dhammacakkhu): "Whatever is subject to origination, all that is subject to cessation."
Then the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends, we are going into the presence of the Blessed One. Whoever approves of that Blessed One's Dhamma, let him come."
Then Sāriputta and Moggallāna, taking those five hundred bhikkhus, approached the Veḷuvana.
Then Kokālika roused Devadatta: "Rise up, friend Devadatta! The bhikkhus have been led away by Sāriputta and Moggallāna. Did I not tell you, friend Devadatta: 'Do not trust Sāriputta and Moggallāna, friend Devadatta; Sāriputta and Moggallāna have evil wishes, they have come under the sway of evil wishes'?"
Then, right there, hot blood issued from Devadatta's mouth.
