[395] Then Sāriputta and Moggallāna approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the bhikkhus who followed the schism-maker were to receive the higher ordination (upasampadā) again."
"Enough, Sāriputta. Do not approve of the re-ordination of the bhikkhus who followed the schism-maker. Rather, Sāriputta, have the bhikkhus who followed the schism-maker confess a grave offense (thullaccaya). But how, Sāriputta, did Devadatta conduct himself toward you?"
"Just as, venerable sir, the Blessed One, having instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk for much of the night, then invites me, saying: 'The Saṅgha of bhikkhus is free of dullness and drowsiness, Sāriputta; let a Dhamma talk to the bhikkhus occur to you, Sāriputta. My back is aching; I shall stretch it' — even so, venerable sir, did Devadatta conduct himself."
