[401] Bhikkhus, overcome and with mind consumed by eight bad qualities (asaddhamma), Devadatta is bound for a state of deprivation (āpāyika), bound for hell, to remain there for an eon, incurable. By which eight? Overcome and with mind consumed by gain, bhikkhus, Devadatta is bound for a state of deprivation, bound for hell, to remain there for an eon, incurable; by loss, bhikkhus, … by fame, bhikkhus, … by disrepute, bhikkhus, … by honor, bhikkhus, … by lack of honor, bhikkhus, … by evil desires, bhikkhus, … overcome and with mind consumed by evil friendship, bhikkhus, Devadatta is bound for a state of deprivation, bound for hell, to remain there for an eon, incurable. Overcome and with mind consumed by these eight bad qualities, bhikkhus, Devadatta is bound for a state of deprivation, bound for hell, to remain there for an eon, incurable.
It is good, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu should abide overcoming again and again arisen gain; arisen loss …; arisen fame; arisen disrepute; arisen honor; arisen lack of honor; arisen evil desire …; that he should abide overcoming again and again arisen evil friendship. And dependent on what benefit, bhikkhus, should a bhikkhu abide overcoming again and again arisen gain; arisen loss …; arisen fame, arisen disrepute, arisen honor, arisen lack of honor, arisen evil desire …; abide overcoming again and again arisen evil friendship? Bhikkhus, whereas for one abiding without overcoming arisen gain there might arise taints (āsava) productive of vexation and fever, for one abiding overcoming again and again arisen gain those taints productive of vexation and fever thus do not exist for him. And whereas, bhikkhus, for one abiding without overcoming arisen loss …; arisen fame, arisen disrepute, arisen honor, arisen lack of honor, arisen evil desire …; arisen evil friendship, there might arise taints productive of vexation and fever, … for one abiding overcoming again and again arisen evil friendship those taints productive of vexation and fever thus do not exist for him. It is dependent on this benefit, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu should abide overcoming again and again arisen gain; arisen loss …; arisen fame, arisen disrepute, arisen honor, arisen lack of honor, arisen evil desire …; abide overcoming again and again arisen evil friendship.
Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'We shall abide overcoming again and again arisen gain; arisen loss …; arisen fame; arisen disrepute; arisen honor; arisen lack of honor; arisen evil desire …; we shall abide overcoming again and again arisen evil friendship.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train.
