[432] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū), though being restrained by the elder bhikkhus in the bathhouse (jantāghara), out of disrespect piled on a great quantity of firewood, lit the fire, closed the door, and sat at the door. And the elder bhikkhus, scorched by the heat and unable to get to the door, fainted and fell down.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … became annoyed, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus, though being restrained by the elder bhikkhus in the bathhouse, out of disrespect pile on a great quantity of firewood, light the fire, close the door, and sit at the door, so that the elder bhikkhus, scorched by the heat and unable to get to the door, faint and fall down?"
Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the group-of-six bhikkhus, though being restrained by the elder bhikkhus in the bathhouse, out of disrespect pile on a great quantity of firewood, light the fire, close the door, and sit at the door, and that bhikkhus, scorched by the heat and unable to get to the door, faint and fall down?"
"It is true, Blessed One." …
Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, when being restrained by an elder bhikkhu in the bathhouse, one should not, out of disrespect, pile on a great quantity of firewood and light the fire; whoever should light it commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). And, bhikkhus, one should not close the door and sit at the door; whoever should sit there commits an offense of wrong-doing. Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down for the bhikkhus the bathhouse observance (jantāgharavatta), according to which bhikkhus should conduct themselves properly in the bathhouse."
