[433] Whoever goes first to the fire hall (jantāghara), if ash has accumulated, the ash should be thrown out. If the fire hall is dirty, the fire hall should be swept. If the surrounding ledge (paribhaṇḍa) is dirty, the surrounding ledge should be swept. If the courtyard (pariveṇa) is dirty, the courtyard should be swept. If the gateway porch (koṭṭhaka) is dirty, the gateway porch should be swept. If the hall of the fire house (jantāgharasālā) is dirty, the hall of the fire house should be swept. Bath powder (cuṇṇa) should be kneaded; clay should be moistened; water should be poured into the water trough. When entering the fire hall, one should smear one's face with clay, cover oneself both in front and behind, and then enter the fire hall. One should not sit encroaching upon the senior (thera) bhikkhus; nor should junior bhikkhus be deprived of a seat. If one is able, service should be rendered to the senior bhikkhus in the fire hall. When leaving the fire hall, one should take the fire-hall stool, cover oneself both in front and behind, and then leave the fire hall. If one is able, service should be rendered to the senior bhikkhus in the water also. One should not bathe in front of the senior bhikkhus, nor should one bathe upstream of them. Having bathed, when coming out, one should give way to those going down.
Whoever leaves the fire hall last, if the fire hall is muddy, it should be washed. Having washed the clay trough, having put away the fire-hall stool, having extinguished the fire, and having closed the door, one may depart.
Bhikkhus, this is the fire-hall duty for bhikkhus, according to which bhikkhus should conduct themselves properly in the fire hall.
