[434] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu of brahmin birth, having defecated, did not wish to rinse himself, thinking, "Who would touch this vile (vasala), foul-smelling thing?" A worm lodged in his anal passage (vaccamagga). Then that bhikkhu informed the bhikkhus of this matter.
"But is it true, friend, that having defecated you did not rinse?"
"It is so, friends."
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … were annoyed, complained, and spread it about, saying, "How can a bhikkhu, having defecated, not rinse?" Then those bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhu, that having defecated you did not rinse?"
"It is true, Blessed One." …
Having rebuked him and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, having defecated, when water is available, one should not fail to rinse. Whoever should not rinse commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
