[436] Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of six (chabbaggiyā) entered the privy (vaccakuṭī) too hastily; they entered with their robes hitched up; they defecated while groaning; they defecated while chewing tooth-wood; they defecated outside the excrement trough; they urinated outside the urine trough; they spat into the urine trough; they wiped themselves with a rough stick; they dropped the wiping stick into the cesspit; they came out too hastily; they came out with their robes hitched up; they rinsed themselves making a "chapu-chapu" noise; and they left water remaining in the rinsing scoop.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhus of the group of six enter the privy too hastily, enter with their robes hitched up, defecate while groaning, defecate while chewing tooth-wood, defecate outside the excrement trough, urinate outside the urine trough, spit into the urine trough, wipe themselves with a rough stick, drop the wiping stick into the cesspit, come out too hastily, come out with their robes hitched up, rinse themselves making a 'chapu-chapu' noise, and leave water remaining in the rinsing scoop?"
Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus …?" … "It is true, Blessed One." … Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down for the bhikkhus the privy observance (vaccakuṭī-vatta), in accordance with which bhikkhus should conduct themselves properly in the privy."
