[438] Now at that time co-resident pupils (saddhivihārika) did not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors (upajjhāya). Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can co-resident pupils not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that co-resident pupils do not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can co-resident pupils not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors? This, bhikkhus, is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence …" Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Therefore, bhikkhus, I shall lay down for co-resident pupils a code of conduct (vatta) toward preceptors, in such a way that co-resident pupils are to conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors."
