[83] Now at that time pupils (saddhivihārika) did not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors (upajjhāya). Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … were annoyed, criticized, and complained: "How can pupils not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that pupils do not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can pupils not conduct themselves properly toward their preceptors?" Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, a pupil must not fail to conduct himself properly toward his preceptor. Whoever should not conduct himself properly commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
They still did not conduct themselves properly. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, one who does not conduct himself properly to be dismissed. And thus, bhikkhus, should he be dismissed: if [the preceptor] makes it known by body, or makes it known by speech, or makes it known by body and speech, [saying] 'I dismiss you,' or 'Do not come back here,' or 'Take away your bowl and robes,' or 'You are not to attend upon me,' the pupil has been dismissed. If he does not make it known by body, does not make it known by speech, does not make it known by body and speech, the pupil has not been dismissed."
Now at that time pupils who had been dismissed did not ask forgiveness. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, that forgiveness be asked." They still did not ask forgiveness. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one who has been dismissed must not fail to ask forgiveness. Whoever should not ask forgiveness commits an offense of wrong-doing."
Now at that time preceptors, when asked for forgiveness, did not forgive. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, that forgiveness be granted." They still did not forgive. Pupils departed, and disrobed, and even went over to adherents of other sects (titthiya). They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, one who is being asked for forgiveness must not withhold forgiveness. Whoever should not forgive commits an offense of wrong-doing."
