[440] Now at that time preceptors (upajjhāya) did not conduct themselves properly toward their co-resident pupils (saddhivihārika). Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained about it, and spread it about, saying: "How can preceptors not conduct themselves properly toward their co-resident pupils?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that preceptors do not conduct themselves properly toward their co-resident pupils?"

Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down for preceptors the duties (vatta) toward their co-resident pupils, in such a way that preceptors should conduct themselves properly toward their co-resident pupils."
